In 2025, Lee's breakout campaign showcased a rare display of volume and grit. She finished the season with a stunning 77-20 record, matching Janice Tjen at the top of the singles match wins ladder in women’s tennis across all pro levels.

Lee’s 2025 achievements, which included capturing 5 World Tennis Tour singles titles, are even more remarkable considering her scarce prior pro experience. After graduating from Georgia Tech in 2024, she was still completely unranked by early February 2025. Yet, Lee concluded the season at No. 213, transforming from a collegiate ace into a historic trailblazer. Building on that meteoric rise, 2026 has seen her rewrite the record books for Northern Mariana Islands tennis:

• Major debut: First player to represent the territory in a Major qualifying draw at the Australian Open.

• WTA Tour breakthrough: First Tour-level main draw appearance and victory at the recent Prague Open, fighting through qualifying and defeating Rouen finalist Veronika Podrez in the opening round.

Lee carried her Prague momentum directly into Warsaw, upsetting top seed Elsa Jacquemot at the start of the event before renewing a fierce rivalry with Knutson in the final. This triumph further polished Samson’s early-career resume. With her comeback victory in Romania, the 18-year-old Czech improved to a stellar 9-1 record in singles finals across all professional levels—a dominant run that now includes wins in her last 8 consecutive title matches.

Samson first gave the tennis world a taste of her potential during an auspicious WTA Tour debut at age 16, stunning second seed Katerina Siniakova en route to the 2024 WTA 250 Prague semifinals. While her teen success has already propelled her to No. 123 in the latest release (a new career-high), additional WTA Tour appearances have been relatively few to date. Samson’s only other notable Tour-level result came at this year’s Mutua Madrid Open, where she registered her first-ever WTA 1000 match win and advanced to the third round.

Quevedo also registered her own maiden WTA 1000 match triumph that same day in Madrid. It was a particularly unforgettable milestone, earned at the expense of tennis legend Venus Williams, and the centrepiece of a definitive year of firsts for the 20-year-old. Quevedo kicked off the 2026 campaign with her WTA Tour main draw debut as a qualifier in Auckland, upsetting 8th seed Peyton Stearns before falling in the second round. Unlike the infinite depth of Czech tennis, the current talent supply in Spain is starkly low, making Quevedo’s emergence even more vital. She presents herself as the nation’s most promising prospect and was already called upon to shoulder the immense pressure of playing as Spain’s No. 1 singles player in the Billie Jean King Cup back in April against Slovenia. Her 2 wins in the singles rubbers offered ample hopes she will be well equipped to carry the flag.

There was a clear consistency gap in the opening set of the Axeria Open final. Quevedo backed up her superior baseline solidity with forehand winners at key moments; one to convert the first break point of the match, another to save a break point in the following game as she eventually reached a 3-0 lead.

Samson tried to impose her game but was either missing too much or clashing against Quevedo’s defense and counter-attacking skills. With a swing volley sent into the net and a double fault, the Czech surrendered her serve for a second time to end the first set.

A fortuitous bounce after a 16-shot rally gifted Samson the first point of the 7th game. Quevedo then overcooked a forehand and left too much air on a drop shot at 15/30. Samson punished it with a backhand approach winner, then outlasted Quevedo in the ensuing rally to secure her first break of the match.

A pair of identical aces helped Samson consolidate her advantage with a hold for 5-3. She then broke again in the following game, deploying some scrappy baseline defense until Quevedo went for too sharp of an angle and missed.

Preston first burst into the spotlight in 2023. As a 17-year-old, she enjoyed a breakthrough season on the World Tennis Tour (WTT, at the time called ITF World Tour), capturing 4 titles and compiling a stellar 48-11 record. She carried that momentum into early 2024, making her Major debut at the Australian Open before securing her first main-draw WTA match win in San Diego and reaching her first WTA 125 final in Puerto Vallarta, where she fell in 3 sets to McCartney Kessler. These rapid-fire results propelled Preston to a then-career-high of No. 134 in March 2024. At the time, she was actively threatening veteran Arina Rodionova—who had famously just become the oldest woman to make a WTA Top-100 debut—for the mantle of Australia’s No. 1 female singles player.

However, Preston’s rapid ascent soon hit a roadblock. Struggling with the rigorous transition to the WTA Tour, her progress stalled. Her confidence took a hit, and she finished 2024 with a modest 30-28 record, barely remaining above a 50% win rate. While Taylah managed to avoid any significant injuries, her sudden exposure to elite competition presented a steep learning curve that took over a year to overcome.

To break the cycle, Preston “dropped back.” Rather than forcing her way into gruelling WTA qualifying draws, she returned to the WTT circuit to rediscover her rhythm. The reset worked flawlessly. Between September 2025 and the end of the year, she mounted a staggering 31-6 match record, capturing 3 titles, finishing as a runner-up once, and reaching 4 additional semifinals.

When Preston returned to the big stage, she was far better equipped. The opening month of 2026 brought a maiden WTA semifinal appearance at the Hobart International—highlighted by a quarterfinal upset over top seed Emma Raducanu—followed by her first-ever Major main-draw win in Melbourne. Preston then claimed her first W100 title 3 months later in Tokyo, which stood as her most significant triumph until last week’s run in Vancouver. Now up to a new career-high No. 106, she is perfectly positioned for the final push into the Top-100.

The Canadian final was equally historic for her opponent. At 28, Inglis is also enjoying a memorable, revitalized season, anchored by a spectacular run to the fourth round of the Australian Open as a qualifier. Preston accrued a set point in the 10th game but squandered it with a ‘serve+1’ error. Inglis capitalised on the small opening, firing a pair of big forehands to break back and level the set at 5-5.

In the tie-break, Preston dominated early to build a substantial 5:1 lead.

While Inglis rallied to narrow the gap to a single point, an unforced error on an inside-out forehand handed Preston 2 more set points at 6:4. Though Preston wasted the first with a double fault, she struck a deep backhand return at Inglis’s feet to convert the second and claim the opener.

The second set followed a similar script. Preston served another double fault to drop her opening service game, but quickly recovered from a 0-2 deficit through superior backhand execution.

After stunning wins over Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek during the grass-court swing, Eala’s week in the US capital represented a true coronation. At just 21 years old, she navigated one of the most formidable paths to a maiden title in recent memory, overcoming the Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng, the defending D.C. champion Leylah Fernandez, and then the top-3 seeds on the trot: second favourite Elina Svitolina, third seed Naomi Osaka and finally top-seeded Pegula, denying her a full-circle moment at Rock Creek Park, where the American won her own first title in 2019.

By conquering Pegula, Eala improved her career record against the Top-10 to a sensational 9-4. This superb win rate confirms her ability to rise to the challenge and beat the elite. Eala Mania is in full flight across the world and the lefty Filipina is living up to it, now up to No. 20 following her impressive Washington run. The hype debate can be put to rest; Eala has definitely arrived.

1. The serve, decisive again

The breakdown of points won by rally length showed Eala’s victory in the Washington final, just like her semifinal defeat of Naomi Osaka, was built from the serve up. Against Pegula, Eala finished with a commanding 23-14 edge in unreturned serves (1-shot points, marked in red).

The major strides Eala has made on serve brought her visible confidence, comfort, and purpose at the line. While she does not possess one of the fastest deliveries on Tour, she now clears a speed threshold that prevents opponents from easily attacking her serve. Instead, Eala is weaponizing the delivery through variety, constantly switching placements and altering the level of her signature lefty slice spin to disrupt the receiver's rhythm. As Pegula later noted, “She kind of baits you with her lefty serve.”

Eala enhances this asset through her aggressive positioning right on top of the baseline, allowing her to pounce immediately whenever the receiver hesitates or fails to get a proper crack at the ball on the return.

As the Washington final progressed, Pegula’s return rhythm fell apart, dropping to under 50% of 1st serve returns landed by the third set.

This wasn’t an issue though, as the Filipina remarkably didn’t face a single break point over the final 2 sets, sweeping through her last 8 consecutive service games. Against Osaka, she accomplished the same in her last 7 service games of that match.

2. Stealing baseline superiority, then running away with it at a crushing rate

Though Pegula suffered an error-strewn spell midway through the opener, she adjusted the shape of her groundstrokes in time to secure a crucial 20-13 edge in baseline duels. This stemmed from Pegula’s 10-4 advantage in the winner count, as both players finished the first set even with 15 unforced errors.

Eala’s forehand leaked 11 of her 15 unforced errors in that opening set, but she cleaned up that wing dramatically as the match wore on.

For those following the World Tennis Tour (WTT), Liutova’s WTA debut added immense intrigue to the Tour’s return to Memphis. The teenager had already been turning heads with the way she lit up the WTT circuit over the first half of the season. She arrived in the “Bluestown” with 3 titles and a spectacular 27-4 record—including a 12-match win streak—boasting a magnificent 87% win rate.

While Liutova claimed the W35 Las Vegas and W100 Sumter crowns in dominant fashion without dropping a single set, her W100 Indian Harbour Beach triumph showcased a grit well beyond her years. In the semifinals, she steamrolled 5th seed Jazmin Ortenzi 7:1 in a deciding third set tie-break. In the final against 8th seed Julia Riera, she quickly overcame the disappointment of failing to serve out the match twice in the second set, resetting to play a clutch final set and win 6-1, 6-7 [4:7], 6-3.

Liutova’s path in Memphis was equally filled with tests that she passed brilliantly:

• Qualifying: Outlasted Maria Kozyreva in another third set tie-break to secure her main draw spot.

• First round: Defeated top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in a gruelling 3-hour battle, where the favourite ultimately succumbed to extreme weather conditions while serving at 4-5 0/30 in the third.

• Second round: Rallied from a set down to defeat Maya Joint 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

• Quarterfinals: Facing a 0-4 second set deficit, reeled off 6 consecutive games to eliminate 6th seed Caty McNally in straight sets.

• Semifinals: Instead of crumbling under the pressure of serving at 4-5 0/30 in the opening set, she won 9 of the next 10 games to storm into the final.

Liutova rounded out an unforgettable week with a formidable comeback in the final. After suffering a heavy first set beatdown—a setback that could easily break the spirit of any young player in a first high-stakes final—she proved her elite mentality. Displaying remarkable level-headedness, she completely took over the match from the second set onward to claim the crown… or, more accurately, the microphone-shaped trophy perfectly suited for her rockstar arrival.

Darja Vidmanova, a 1.82m (6’ 2’’) Czech who claimed a maiden WTA 125 title in Figueira da Foz right before Wimbledon, was also in her first career Tour-level final appearance. She made a perfect start, combining thunderous serving…

But Vidmanova was soon plagued by inconsistency issues, which emerged in the early stages of the second set. The forehand, in particular, deserted her—producing the same 4 winners as in set 1, but paired with 13 errors. Overall, Vidmanova’s performance plummeted from +5 to -11 in her winners-to-unforced errors differential.

The former NCAA standout was further taxed by a shortage of free points off her serve. After Liutova made a key adjustment and stood a step deeper to take on Vidmanova’s first serves, the teenager successfully returned 88% (23/26) of the 1st serves she faced over the last 2 sets. This was a massive rise from just 59% (10/17) in the opening set.

With a clear drop-off in her 'serve+1’ and ‘return+1’ execution as well, Vidmanova became increasingly hesitant to take risks. Her early-rally passivity opened the door for Liutova to dictate terms—an invitation met with both bravery and mature point construction. Never lured into rushing for a low-percentage big shot, she patiently smothered her opponent, building pressure with each additional groundstroke until she was well inside the court for an easy finish.

Liutova’s ability to convert her opportunities once in control was certainly one of her most remarkable traits. On top of all the winners she struck from a couple of meters inside the baseline, the qualifier also ended the Memphis final with a total of 10 approach winners (marked by gold box, below on the left)…

…and a superb 80% efficiency in the forecourt, winning 16 points in 20 advances.

Her execution didn’t waver, even when a maiden WTA title became ever so close.

Vidmanova’s poor 44% match-long win rate in the forecourt only added to her problems over the last 2 sets. Despite her struggles, the Czech mounted a brilliant late stand, hitting 3 of her best shots of the match to save 3 championship points before breaking Liutova to close the gap to 3-5 in the decider.

Yet, just as Liutova had done all week, she remained completely unfazed by the setback, shrugging off the lost service game to play a clutch final game and seal a surprising title.

Top seed Jessica Pegula stands as the final challenge for Eala in Washington. The world No. 3 is aiming to come full circle at Rock Creek Park, the very venue where she opened her WTA title account back in 2019. Meanwhile, Eala is determined to conquer a historic first WTA title for the Philippines. Her only previous championship experience was in Eastbourne last year, which ended in a heartbreaking near-miss for the young lefty.

Eala earned her second shot at a maiden title by utterly outplaying Osaka in yesterday’s bottom-half semifinal. Next, we discuss four key observations from that match.

1. An unbelievable run on serve

The most stunning fact of this Washington semifinal was Eala enjoying an astonishing 27-4 stretch on serve from the middle of the first set until she reached 3 match points! Who would have believed this just a couple of months ago?

In our recent piece dedicated to Eala’s triumph over defending champion Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, we highlighted how grass-court dynamics were shielding her delivery:

“A primary catalyst for Eala’s success on grass is how the surface shields her vulnerable serve. The low, slick bounce prevents opponents from easily attacking her delivery, while her natural slice skids aggressively off the turf. Eala also seems to be injecting a bit more pace into her serves and decreasing her exposure by reducing middle-of-the-box serves. A glaring liability has been transformed into a weapon, at least for a few weeks.”

It now appears that Eala’s improved serving is becoming a permanent development, seamlessly transitioning onto the North American hardcourts.

As Eala continued to show a shrinking vulnerability against Osaka, she put together an elite service run that would make the best servers in the game jealous. After securing the first break at 1-2, Eala was immediately broken back for 2-2. Instead of letting her confidence shake, she locked down. The Filipina won 12 of the next 13 points on her serve for the rest of the set—including 12 in a row. That consecutive streak eventually grew to 18 straight points on serve, finally ending when she was already a set and a break up at 6-4, 2-1 30/0.

After Osaka finally stopped that run and then hit a clean backhand line winner to push the game to 30/30, Eala quickly shut down the momentum. She fired an unreturned wide serve as Osaka leaned toward the middle, followed by a ‘serve+1’ winner to secure a 3-1 hold.

Those were the sort of points that characterized Eala’s performance.

Untroubled on serve for the rest of the match, she reached 3 match points with another dominant 7-0 run. It was only then that Osaka ripped her first return winner of the contest, followed by Eala’s lone double fault. The course was quickly corrected: a hooking lefty serve set up a forceful line forehand to clinch the match.

Final match data shows just how heavily Eala dominated first-strike tennis, with numbers very few predicted before the match, and for which her serving made a crucial contribution.

Osaka’s inability to press Eala’s serve is clearly reflected in her lack of return winners (a single one), as well as in Eala’s incredibly low number of ‘serve+1’ mistakes (only 2).

As Osaka struggled to come to terms with her opponent’s swerving, lefty deliveries, her failure to make clean contact left a high volume of short balls. An aggressive Eala consistently pounced on them, racking up 7 ‘serve+1’ winners to Osaka’s 4.

2. Osaka’s poor performance against 2nd serves

For her opponent, 5th seed Tamara Korpatsch (WTA No. 75), Hamburg is home. While Bondar chased a first WTA crown, Korpatsch looked to achieve the ultimate childhood tennis dream: capturing a title on home soil in front of family, friends, and local fans.

Carrying a dominant 4-0 head-to-head record against Bondar—including 3 straight-sets victories on clay—Korpatsch stepped onto the court determined to exploit her opponent’s fatigue. Recognizing the toll of Bondar's exhausting 3h29min semifinal marathon against Elina Avanesyan, the German utilized the full width of the court to her advantage, patiently pulling Bondar wide until creating a large enough opening to strike.

Even when pushed wide herself, Korpatsch produced some outstanding shots as she raced to a rapid 3-0 lead.

For Bondar, the storm finally seemed managed when she fired a forehand winner to prevent a 1-5 double-break deficit, and then rode the momentum off that wing to break Korpatsch in the following game.

Korpatsch immediately restored her advantage, however. She secured the decisive break of the first set at 3-4 by steering play away from Bondar’s dangerous forehand, dragging the Hungarian into long rallies, and extracting errors through superb width or depth.

Not a bad consolation prize, considering the immense buzz surrounding the 18-year-old Austrian. From her promising precocity to her classic playing style and exemplary on-court attitude, here are some of the traits that make Tagger a truly special player bound to garner a massive following:

• The classic one-handed backhand: Any player keeping this dying breed alive automatically becomes a fan favourite among tennis purists. The fact that she is coached by Francesca Schiavone, herself renowned for a distinctive, stylish one-handed backhand, only strengthens that connection.

• The Jannik Sinner link: Both born and raised in the Tyrol region, Tagger and Sinner share a passion for skiing, as well as the exact same management team.

• Pro success at a young age: Tagger finished 2025 with a stellar 83% win rate on the now called World Tennis Tour, capturing 30 wins out of 36 matches to claim 3 titles. She remains undefeated on that circuit this season, having won the W100 Fujairah title in her sole WTT appearance of 2026.

• A historic WTA debut: Tagger reached the Jiujiang final on her Tour-level main draw debut, becoming just the third player under 18 to do so this century. She achieved it in dramatic fashion, nervelessly saving 3 match points in the semifinal against seasoned veteran Viktorija Golubic.

Tagger showed her mettle once again last week in Prague. First, she overcame Sara Bejlek in the quarterfinals, avenging a fairly one-sided 2-6, 2-6 defeat to her just the week prior in Athens. Then, Tagger outlasted Athens champion Barbora Krejcikova in a near 3-hour semifinal decided by a third-set tie-break. Finally, the teenager overcame a slow start in the final to defeat 8th seed Daria Snigur 7-6 [7:3], 6-2 and secure her maiden WTA title.

With her breakthrough run in Prague, Snigur became the 6th Ukrainian woman to reach a WTA singles final this season. She made an inspired start to her biggest career match to date by racing to a 3-0 lead with her backhand dictating play.

When it came to Tour-level championship pedigree, however, the two finalists had different track records. Badosa brought an unblemished 4-0 stat line in WTA finals into the match, dating back to her last title run at Washington 2024. Conversely, Sherif stood at 1-2 in singles finals following her heartbreak in Rabat 2024.

Torrential rain in Iasi immediately following the completion of the doubles final forced tournament officials to postpone the singles showpiece to Monday morning. With both competitors about to contest their 10th match in 14 days, the scheduling delay initially seemed like a blessing in disguise, offering an extra night of rest. Ultimately, it proved to be anything but; with her body struggling to cope with the recent heavy load, Badosa decided against taking unnecessary risks and retired while trailing 4-6, 0-4. During the trophy ceremony, she offered a public apology to the Romanian crowd, admitting that she “hated” having to stop but that her body simply could not continue.

Badosa’s decision to stop must not be separated from the calibre of the opponent she was facing across the net. When struggling physically, a confident and in-form Sherif is a nightmare opponent. The Egyptian thrives on converting tennis matches into gruelling marathon battles; just the previous weekend, she had fought back from a set and 0-5 down in the Contrexéville final to claim the title in 3 hours.

Possessing a unique playing style, Sherif lands a high percentage of 1st serves and systematically unsettles opponents by shifting between a wide variety of strokes and unpredictable patterns. She is capable of striking heavy groundstrokes, frequently weaponizes high, looping topspin shots, and seamlessly mixes in occasional drop shots or sneaky net rushes.

In the Iasi final, Sherif’s tremendously efficient line backhand was the unexpected element that shone early, either forcing immediate errors or helping her seize control of rallies.

Twice, in the 3rd and 5th games, Sherif broke Badosa’s serve only to get broken back straight away. A 5th consecutive break followed at 3-3, as Badosa fell victim to her persistent lack of inspiration in the forecourt.

That break in the 7th game proved to be the decisive one of the opening set, as Sherif finally confirmed her advantage with a love hold to make it 5-3. She punctuated her 8-0 point run with a ‘serve+1’ forehand winner, following an earlier overhead smash winner and a pair of backhand unforced errors from Badosa.

Badosa responded with her own love hold, but a momentary drop in return efficiency in the ensuing game allowed Sherif to serve out the set comfortably at 5-4.

Sherif quickly jumped out to an early second set lead as an increasingly weary Badosa hit a double fault and missed 2 ‘serve+1’ backhands in the opening game.

The Spaniard was handed an immediate chance to break back when Sherif netted a drop shot—her least efficient shot of the final, with just a 40% (4-for-10) success rate—at 30/30 in the 2nd game. However, Sherif erased the resulting break point with a perfectly executed sequence: adopting a very wide serving position, commanding the rally with heavy inside-out forehands, and moving up the court to strike an inside-in winner off a short reply.

The Egyptian eventually held for 2-0 and firmly established control of the match by concluding this 16-shot rally with a lob winner that pushed her toward a set and double-break cushion.

With her physical condition deteriorating, Badosa became increasingly prone to pulling the trigger early in the point. But that didn’t change her fate. After overhitting a 2nd serve backhand return to squander one last break point during the 4th game, she pulled the plug as soon as Sherif secured a hold for 4-0.

By the end of the Iasi final, no metric was more divergent than success at the net: Sherif won 8 of 13 forecourt forays (62%) while Badosa finished the day with a dismal 1-for-8 performance at the net (13%).

These disparate win rates were the perfect illustration of their opposite abilities in executing medium-length patterns. Sherif picked up a massive 26-12 advantage in points decided in the 5-to-8 shot range, accounting for 78% of her final winning margin.

A true trailblazer for Egyptian women’s tennis, Sherif had claimed a memorable maiden title by defeating former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari in the 2022 Parma final. She successfully doubled her career WTA singles title count in Iasi with a triumph over a former world No. 2.

The result extended Sherif’s winning streak on clay to 15 matches, marking her third consecutive title on the red dirt following back-to-back WTA 125 trophies in Brescia and Contrexéville.

This highly profitable sequence—interrupted only by a first round exit in Wimbledon qualifying against Harriet Dart—continued last week in Hamburg, where Sherif reached 18 consecutive victories on clay with a dramatic quarterfinal win over Badosa. This time, instead of a mid-match retirement, the pair clashed in an all-out battle lasting a whopping 3 hours and 26 minutes. Sherif prevailed 7-6 [7:4], 6-7 [2:7], 6-4, but subsequently became a victim of her own success, retiring from her semifinal against Tamara Korpatsch the following day while trailing 1-6, 0-2 due to a left hip and leg injury.

Despite the immediate exhaustion, the extraordinary body of work put in over the past month has lifted Sherif back inside the world’s Top-50, landing at exactly No. 50 in the latest rankings update. Meanwhile, Badosa’s resurgent summer has successfully climbed her back into the Top-100 at No. 84.

The Greek capital previously hosted the Athens Trophy from 1986 to 1990. The inaugural 1986 edition was particularly special as it featured local favourite Angeliki Kanellopoulou in the final. A runner-up to Sylvia Hanika on that occasion, Kanellopoulou holds deeper ties with Greek tennis; she is the mother of Maria Sakkari, the country’s most successful female player in history, a former world No. 3, and owner of 2 WTA singles titles.

Sakkari, the 4th seed at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens Open 26, embraced the unique opportunity to compete where her professional dreams first began, matching her mother’s historic feat by reaching the final exactly 40 years later. While she had shown improved form since the start of the season in Australia, this week on home soil marked her first final appearance since Indian Wells 2024.

Sakkari hoped the boisterous support of a capacity crowd at the historic Olympic Tennis Centre would help her overcome two steep mental hurdles. The first was her poor record in championship matches, having won just 2 of her previous 10 finals. The second was her opponent. Given the choice, Sakkari likely would have picked anyone in the draw other than 3rd seed Barbora Krejcikova.

The 30-year-old Czech held a 3-0 head-to-head advantage over Sakkari. Their most notable encounter was a massive career opportunity in the 2021 Roland-Garros semifinals, with a first Major final on the line. After defeating defending champion Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals, Sakkari held a match point at 5-3 in the third set against Krejcikova, but ultimately fell 7-9 in a marathon decider.

Krejcikova went on to defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final to extend her winning streak to 12 matches, opening her career singles title account with back-to-back triumphs in Strasbourg and Paris while capturing her maiden Major as an unseeded player.

Following that Roland-Garros heartbreak, Sakkari reached the 2021 US Open semifinals but was stopped by an even greater Cinderella run—losing to Emma Raducanu—and has failed to advance past the 3rd round in her last 18 Majors. Meanwhile, Krejcikova captured her second Major singles title at Wimbledon 2024 before enduring nearly 2 years of physical struggles. Just as there finally seemed to be light at the end of the tunnel when Krejcikova reached this year’s ’s-Hertogenbosch final, she was forced to pull out of that match due to illness. Fortunately, the positive signs provided during that week were followed up by a 4th round run at Wimbledon, with her surge in form continuing all the way to Athens.

One certainty about the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens Open final showdown was that it would end a prolonged drought: either crowning the home favourite for the first time in 34 months, or handing Krejcikova her first title in 2 years.

Match analysis

The Athens final started with Sakkari serving lights out, targeting the middle ‘T’ with precision.

At 1-2, she began crafting the first break of the contest with a brilliant backhand pass on the run, completing the break at love thanks to a Krejcikova double fault and a pair of quick backhand mistakes.

Despite falling 1-4 behind, Krejcikova never lost her cool. She slowly wrestled serving supremacy away from Sakkari. In contrast to the crowd favourite, the Czech did most of her damage by sliding her deliveries wide.

By the end of the match, the differences in their 1st serve strategies were stark:

• 76% points won (13/17)

• 61% frequency (17/28)

Two crucial metrics tilted the serving battle heavily in favour of Krejcikova. First, she landed 67% of her 1st serves, while Sakkari finished just below 50%. Second, because both players yielded a similar return-in-play rate of around 60%, Krejcikova collected an 8-point advantage off unreturned 1st serves (18 to 10) despite being out-aced 2 to 5.

Not only did Krejcikova elevate her serving quality midway through the opener, but her signature geometric baseline tennis clicked into gear. Taking control of rally exchanges through exceptional angle creation, she capitalized on an erratic 7th game from Sakkari to break back, subsequently levelling the score at 4-4.

Sakkari generated a minor opening at 4-5 15/30 on the Czech’s serve, but Krejcikova responded emphatically with a timely inside-in forehand set up by a very deep 2nd serve, a winning wide 1st serve, and a forcing crosscourt backhand that dragged Sakkari out to the tramlines.

The set was ultimately decided in a tie-break. Sakkari recovered from an early mini-break deficit to draw level at 5:5, but netted a crucial 2nd serve return before failing to do enough with a slice forehand approach on Krejcikova’s set point.

The second set mirrored the architecture of the opener. Sakkari broke first once again, producing a phenomenal backhand winner from well out of court, a volley winner, and a running passing shot on break point to establish a 2-1 lead.

Just as she did in the first set, Krejcikova remained unfazed and broke back immediately. After opening her 4th game account with a deep inside-in forehand, she systematically targeted Sakkari’s backhand wing to force 3 consecutive errors.

Though Krejcikova was not entirely flawless on her inside-in forehands—registering 5 unforced errors alongside 6 winning groundstrokes—she successfully executed them at critical inflection points.

Notable examples late in the match included a converted game point for 3-3 and the forcing ‘serve+1’ that set up championship point.

In between, Krejcikova secured the definitive break of the second set with some incredibly crafty tennis. She struck a sharp, angled crosscourt forehand to assert net position, then carved a sliding slice backhand to manufacture a break point opportunity.

That break point was converted via an overhit inside-in forehand from Sakkari. The Athens final concluded in almost identical fashion, with the Greek star steering another run-around forehand wide.

Remarkably, Sakkari finished the Athens final with a massive 23 to 10 advantage in winners, winning 5 more baseline duels (32 to 27) or 4 more rallies overall (42 to 38). Yet, she suffered another heartbreaking loss at the hands of Krejcikova.

The Czech’s superior 1st serve consistency and clutch groundstroke execution proved decisive in the end. That same possibility reemerged during the grass-court swing, even fueling dreams of a Wimbledon final between the two in a direct shootout for both the Venus Rosewater Dish and the top ranking. However, that exciting scenario never gained real traction, as Rybakina was nowhere near her best version on grass this year. Following just a lone win in the tune-up events, the Kazakh wasn’t a true contender at SW19 and crashed out in a shocking third round upset to Elise Mertens. This was a surprise further amplified by Rybakina’s overwhelming advantages on paper: she was a former Wimbledon champion, was actively vying for the world No. 1 spot, and held a dominant 7-1 head-to-head record against Mertens, including 6 consecutive wins.

The second seed began their 9th career meeting at a decent level, but her form soon dipped and she was unable to mount a response against Mertens’s inspired play. Executing to perfection a highly positive, brave game plan, the Belgian was rewarded for it with a first win over Rybakina since Madrid 2021 and, simultaneously, her biggest ever win by ranking.

By the end of the match, it was impossible not to feel that a more volatile, past version of Rybakina’s game seems to have resurfaced ever since her Stuttgart title. Once the Tour transitioned to outdoor clay, predicting which version of the Kazakh will show up on any given day has become somewhat of a gamble.

Across all professional levels, the German’s career win rates on clay and hardcourts hover just above 50%. Yet, from the end of May to the middle of July, she wins roughly 2 out of every 3 matches, elevating her grass-court success to 68%. Her unique style thrives when the ball skids fast and stays low.

It also ensured a joyful celebration, avoiding a repeat of the tears shed by her daughter, Charlotte, during the Eastbourne trophy ceremony.

Maria is always a tricky opponent due to a rare, slice-heavy blueprint that defies modern conventions. However, she becomes exponentially tougher to beat on grass, a surface that directly rewards her specific strengths. Her net rushes find a reinvigorated efficiency, and her low-skidding groundstrokes do more than just stay safely beneath the opponent’s ideal strike zone; they can make their entire job miserable.

By remaining faithful to her disruptive game of sudden rhythm changes and sneaky forecourt forays, Maria consistently forces players to battle well outside their comfort zones. These features were once again on full display in the Newport final.

In a fascinating twist, Volynets—a terrific mover renowned for her counterpunching baseline style—stormed the net on the very first 2 points of the match.

Backed by a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over Maria, including a victory at Wimbledon last year, the 24-year-old American clearly understood the assignment. She knew that beating the German again on grass required taking time away and beating her to the punch at the net.

Her tactical gamble transformed the final into a net-rushing exhibition. By the time the last ball was struck, the two finalists had combined for a staggering 99 net attacks, while baseline duels were limited to just 19.

In the end, three main factors led Maria to triumph in the Newport final:

2. Chip-and-charge returns

3. Soft touch at the net

1. Free points off the serve

Maria finished the encounter with 11 unreturned serves (2 aces and 9 missed returns by Volynets). Volynets could only reply with 3, all coming from Maria’s return errors. That created a decisive 8-point gap in a match with a final total point margin of just 9 (66 to 57).

Notably, Maria directed most of her serves to Volynets’s forehand return. The significant win rate drop observed on serves to the backhand validates Maria’s primary target choice:

2. Chip-and-charge returns

Volynets’s serve remains arguably her weakest link. It proved to be a dual liability during the Newport final, failing to match Maria’s serve production while simultaneously failing to prevent the German from attacking immediately on the return.

Maria consistently went on offense with the old-school chip-and-charge play, moving forward right behind a slice return. Several times she capitalized on the lack of pace by hitting a drop shot.

In total, Maria attempted a chip-and-charge return against exactly one-third of Volynets’s valid deliveries (19/57), winning 14 of those 19 points for a superb 74% win rate.

She converted 3 break points by successfully executing this play and leaned heavily on it in the 10th game of the second set to clinch the title.

From those 14 points won, a follow-up shot wasn’t even necessary on 8 occasions. In the other 6 instances, the experienced German hit at least one volley to come out on top, linking perfectly to her clinical efficiency at the net.

3. Soft touch at the net

Maria concluded the match with 13 net winners, the vast majority struck on volleys: 7 on the forehand and 4 on the backhand, totalling 11 volley winners against just 5 errors.

Her fantastic touch and sharp sense of anticipation around the net were a frequent sight throughout the afternoon.

Fascinatingly, Volynets actually finished with more winners at the net, 15 against Maria’s 13, though they were entirely different in nature. Because Maria deployed her usual array of defensive lobs, Volynets was able to rack up 12 overhead winners.

At the start of the second set, Volynets adjusted her tactics and began making her fair share of net rushes directly behind her return. Instead of slices, she attacked through aggressive topspin returns, setting up a number of winning ‘return+1s’.

As a result of these successful surges, Volynets collected a 15-9 advantage in 4-shot rallies.

Unfortunately for her title hopes, she was only capable of executing this strategy against 2nd serves, and Maria left very little opening by landing a crucial 70% of her 1st serves during the second set.

Consequently, Volynets’s ‘return+1’ production proved insufficient to offset Maria’s superiority, in particular her previously detailed combined advantage in unreturned serves (1-shot points) and rapid 2-shot points.

Last week in Bastad, the 28-year-old Spaniard ended a near 2-year title drought, clinching her maiden WTA 125 trophy with a 7-5, 7-5 win over 4th seed Simona Waltert in the final of the 2026 Nordea Open. This week, the former world No. 2 has seamlessly carried that momentum into Iasi, advancing to her first Tour-level final since Washington in 2024. Standing between Badosa and the crown in today’s final will be Mayar Sherif, who is on a hot streak of her own following a miraculous comeback win in Contrexéville last Sunday (detailed in yesterday’s piece).

So often disturbed by her recurring physical issues—most notably a chronic back problem and a torn labrum—Badosa had little to show for from the first half of this season. Before arriving in Sweden, her highlights were limited to a semifinal run at WTA 125 Austin, falling to a Bianca Andreescu also looking to resurrect her career, plus a headline-grabbing upset over Coco Gauff on the grass courts of Berlin.

A trip to the Swedish coast provided the perfect tonic. The week yielded consistent match play, valuable victories, and a first title in nearly 2 years, achieved without dropping a single set.

While the march through Bastad was fairly straightforward, the run to the final in Iasi has required sheer grit. In the second round, Badosa had to roar back from 1-4 down in the third set against Alevtina Ibragimova. She followed that escape with a sweet dose of revenge against Tamara Zidansek in yesterday’s semifinals. At one point, Paula trailed by a set and 3-5, then had to break Zidansek as she served for the match once again at 6-5 in the decider, before finally prevailing 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 [7:1]. You might remember their epic 2021 Roland-Garros quarterfinal, won by Zidansek 8-6 in the final set.

Now it will be a question of how well Badosa can recover in order to protect her perfect 4-0 record in Tour-level finals. Remarkably, the last time Badosa lost a singles final at any professional level was back in October 2019, at a W25 tournament in Hamamatsu, Japan—conceded on a mid-match retirement, no less.

Match analysis

1. A triumph built from the serve up

In the Bastad final, Badosa’s serve was her primary weapon.

As shown in the breakdown of points won by rally length, unreturned serves (i.e. 1 -shot points, marked in red below) created a decisive 25-10 difference in favour of the Spaniard. That 15-point advantage was more than double the final winning margin of 7 points (81 to 74).

A defining feature of Badosa’s serving performance was her ability to extract return errors across multiple locations. She found great success going wide with her 1st serve to both sides of the court. A handful of free points were also claimed through Deuce side 1st serves targeting Waltert’s backhand and swerving directly into her body, as well as through AD side ‘T’ 1st serves.

Badosa’s serving consistency was a massive factor throughout the contest. In 8 of her 12 service games, she won at least 2 free points directly off the serve. Because she was serving first, this relentless efficiency meant Waltert spent most of the match facing intense scoreboard pressure. It ultimately paid dividends in the 12th game of each set.

2. Inability to land returns proved costly

Waltert showed superior firepower in the Bastad final, outhitting Badosa by a significant 29-14 winner count.

Her commitment to going for her shots was commendable, particularly late in the second set with the match on the line.

Unafraid to take the initiative, the 25-year-old Swiss produced some spectacular winners, while Badosa seemed more inclined to hold back, playing safer and leaving a few short balls as the trophy grew closer.

In the end, Waltert’s inability to consistently put Badosa’s 1st serves back into play meant she rarely generated momentum on her opponent's serve.

This forced Waltert to play catch-up for the duration of the final, effectively neutralizing her baseline firepower supremacy.

3. Rare, yet timely backhand contributions

Badosa’s backhand was quiet for most of the match, but it came alive for some incredibly timely surges.

With Waltert serving at 5-6 30/0 in the opening set, it was a backhand hit with her body facing the wrong way that sparked the Spaniard's set-winning 4-point run. A sudden backhand collapse from Waltert did the rest.

Remarkably, Badosa arrived at the 12th game of the second set with just a single backhand winner struck across the previous 23 games. But in that final game, Badosa’s backhand ripped a pair of winners to deny Waltert a comfortable hold. This execution allowed her to capitalize on a trio of forehand errors from Waltert that concluded the match.

4. Clinical performance on break points

In a final characterized by a relatively low number of break opportunities, Badosa’s superiority during these high-stakes moments proved crucial.

The Bastad champion was the only player capable of saving break points, denying Waltert in the opening game of the second set and again at 3-3.

These holds were massive; they kept the Spaniard ahead on the scoreboard and compounded the psychological pressure on Waltert.

When it was her turn, Badosa was absolutely ruthless. Every time she carved out a break opportunity on Waltert’s serve, she pounced, finishing the match with a perfect 100% break point conversion rate.

Facing Jeline Vandromme in the Grand Est Open 88 final, Sherif looked completely down and out after losing 11 of the opening 14 games. Yet, trailing 3-6, 0-5, she began her escape. The Egyptian saved a match point with a bold play while serving at 1-5, and proceeded to break all 4 times the 18-year-old Belgian served for the title. Vandromme dropped her serve at love at 6-5, then suffered another shutout in the tie-break as Sherif reeled off 11 consecutive points to level the match.

Any expectations of a rapid collapse from the disappointed teenager were quickly dismissed when Vandromme raced to a 2-0 lead in the third. Sherif responded by storming through 5 straight games, only to falter herself when serving for the title at both 5-2 and 5-4. After breaking once more for 6-5, Sherif erased one last break point with a gutsy drop-shot winner before finally securing the crown. The brutal, 3-hour marathon required a staggering 7 combined attempts to serve out the match, with the final set ultimately outlasting the dramatic second.

The outcome provided poetic justice for Sherif. It erased the heartbreak of the Contrexéville final from just 2 years ago, where her own legendary comeback attempt fell agonizingly short against Lucia Bronzetti. In that 2024 clash, Sherif rallied from a set and 0-4 down, saving a match point at 4-5 to force a decider. In the third set, she miraculously erased 4 match points while serving at 3-5, and 3 more in the next game to level at 5-5. However, she was broken immediately after, eventually falling 4-6, 7-6 [7:4], 5-7 on Bronzetti’s 10th match point.

Sherif began this year’s Contrexéville final spraying errors all over the court. During the opening 14 games, her forehand was at fault initially, but her backhand also struggled for consistency. At the same time, Vandromme’s forehand performed admirably, producing 4 more winners than mistakes to control the match.

Though Vandromme quickly fell 0/40 down while serving for the title at 5-0 in the second set, she still managed to reach championship point in the following game. Staring at imminent defeat, Sherif came up with a high-risk, high-reward save. She hit a superbly angled 2nd serve, rushed the net behind a line backhand, and finished the point with a clinical stop-volley winner.

This prompted Sherif to find her rhythm on her touch shots. After managing just a 43% win rate (3-for-7) on drop shots during those erratic opening 14 games, the 5th seed went a perfect 7-for-7 during her second set resurgence.

Meanwhile, Vandromme’s baseline solidity dipped. Also hurt by untimely double faults to start the games at 5-2 and 6-5, the teenager felt the weight of the moment and ended the second set losing 11 consecutive points on her own serve, with 7 of the last 8 conceded either through a double fault or a premature ‘serve+1’ mistake.

The third set offered a tense mix of continuation and role reversal. Sherif was now the frontrunner building a 5-2 lead. However, as she continued to rely heavily on the drop shot, her advantage began to evaporate due to Vandromme’s improved ability to run them down.

After a Sherif double fault leveled the decider at 5-5, the match swung on a crucial 30/30 point in the 11th game. This time, it was Vandromme who opted for the short ball. Just as it looked like she would win the point, her lunging volley on the stretch failed to clear the net. A ‘serve+1’ backhand miss followed immediately, gifting Sherif her 3rd opportunity to serve out the match.

True to the nature of this final, a thrilling see-saw affair was reserved for the closing game. Sherif was unable to convert her first championship point, then had to manufacture a brilliant drop-shot winner to avoid a third set tie-break. The Egyptian finally concluded her remarkable comeback when Vandromme sent a return into the net on championship point #2.

The final stats reveal exactly how this dramatic turnaround happened. Over the second part of the Contrexéville final, Sherif’s consistency improved just enough for her to take advantage of Vandromme’s significant drop in level. The Belgian’s forehand fell from a +4 differential to a -19 differential after she racked up 35 errors from the moment she built that 5-0 lead in the second set.

Serves also made a huge difference. Sherif hit 2 aces and forced 5 more errors on the return, plus Vandromme gave away 6 more double faults over that span.

This dramatic win was Sherif’s 10th straight victory on clay, giving her back-to-back titles on the surface. Before a quick first round loss to Heather Watson in Wimbledon qualifying, she had won the WTA 125 title in Brescia. Sherif’s hot streak is still going; she is already in the semifinals at the WTA 250 tournament in Iași, where she plays 3rd seed Oleksandra Oliynykova later today.

As the first player to reach double-digit WTA 125 titles, Sherif has now doubled the count of her nearest competition.

Early signs show that Vandromme is bouncing back well from missing her first WTA 125 trophy. This week in Kitzbuhel, she won 2 matches before losing to Julia Grabher in yesterday’s quarterfinals.

As we wrote in our Wimbledon final analysis, every tennis player goes through tough learning moments and painful losses when victory is almost in their hands. The Belgian teenager currently holds an excellent 40-15 record this year, with 2 titles and 4 finals reached. Interestingly, her last 3 finals have all been completely extreme:

• W50 Nantes: Won the title after Mona Barthel retired while trailing 2-3 in the first set.

• W75 Calvi: Won the title with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 score against Katherine Sebov.

• WTA 125 Contrexéville: Lost a wild 3-hour match from a set and 5-0 up, missing a match point.

It leaves us highly curious to see what might come next.

But instead of watching Noskova deliver a merciful final blow to conclude another championship match beatdown, tennis fans were treated to some of the most electrifying drama ever witnessed on such a majestic stage. While the emotional peak of the afternoon came later, when Noskova blew a poignant kiss to the sky in honour of her late mother, the sheer intensity of the final 5 games of the second set, and the entire third set, didn’t trail far behind.

Centre Court became the epicenter of surprise, astonishment, disbelief, and a breathless curiosity for what would unravel next. The unique brilliance of tennis’s scoring system worked its magic once again; just as the 21-year-old Noskova finally showed her age under the crushing pressure, Muchova unleashed a fierce fighting spirit that is so often overshadowed by her physical issues.

This was the staggering scale of Noskova’s second set collapse: 5 championship points for a Wimbledon title, gone. One on her own serve, wasted with a double fault.

Noskova walked out for the third set carrying the immense pressure of knowing only one of two stark realities would materialize within the next hour: either she would get back into a winning position and conquer her nerves after they had just betrayed her in front of the entire world to become Wimbledon champion, or her early career would be permanently defined by a historic choke. Ahead lay either her best or worst moment on a tennis court.

The young Czech did the hardest thing in sports. She blocked any negative thoughts and emotions and played a near-perfect deciding set under the most testing circumstances. Her brilliant reset included literally blocking out the noise by putting her fingers in her ears, going to the bathroom, and splashing cold water on her face. Having to walk past the trophies, instead of looking away in fear or shame, she stared directly at them, redefined the goal, recentered her focus, and got ready to start over.

The steady, mature-beyond-her-years composure of Noskova’s typical on-court demeanor projects such an impressive aura that we’re almost inclined to think the afternoon’s biggest surprise wasn’t her most epic regroup, but the fact that she choked in the first place. That’s how easily her poised presence can distort our perception!

In reality, Noskova’s young career has not been entirely free of growing pains. Losing 5 of her first 6 WTA finals is one example. Another was her meltdown in last year’s Bad Homburg semifinal; after failing to serve out the match against Jessica Pegula at 5-4 in the second set, she won only one more game the rest of the way before bowing out 7-6 [7:2], 5-7, 1-6. These exact setbacks, endured before Saturday’s supreme achievement, serve as a powerful reminder of the painful but necessary hurdles that shape the journey of even the most accomplished young prodigies.

1. One Point From Glory through Serve and Baseline Dominance

Noskova’s serve proved to be an impenetrable fortress in the initial stages of the 2026 Wimbledon Ladies’ singles final. The 9th seed’s outstanding serving display was perfectly encapsulated by the following data points:

• 0 break points faced in the opening set.

• 94% of 1st serve points won across the opening stretch (17/18).

• A blistering 67% unreturned 1st serve rate during those same 18 points (12/18).

From the 3rd game of the second set onward, Muchova finally found solutions to get more 1st serves back in play. Her 1st serve return rate jumped to 74% (39/53) from that moment until the end of the match. However, winning points proved to be a completely different proposition. By the time Noskova stepped up to the line to serve for the title at 5-3 in the second set, she had yet to drop serve all afternoon, winning an outstanding 22 of 25 1st serve points (88%).

Her only moment of genuine danger on serve during this period occurred at 1-1 in the second set. She navigated the threat masterfully, unleashing a flawless serve-&-forehand combination followed by a lethal ‘T’ serve to erase 2 break points in quick succession, before Muchova squandered her true chance—the only one played behind a 2nd serve—by overhitting an inside-in forehand.

Given the overall baseline superiority Noskova was displaying, it was only a matter of time until she secured a potentially decisive breakthrough. It arrived at 2-3, initiated by another missed inside-in forehand from Muchova and sealed by a forcing backhand return from the young Czech.

As Noskova headed to her chair holding a set and a commanding 5-2 lead, a dejected Muchova sat slumped during the changeover, the picture of disappointment.

Whether she was hindered by nerves or the lingering issue near the ribs that surfaced during her semifinal victory over Coco Gauff, Muchova’s movement appeared stiff and lacked its usual agility. It was a critical deficit when trying to handle Noskova’s lightning groundstrokes, fired mostly through the shortest trajectories: line or middle, meaning they remained entirely on the same half of the court (marked in green and blue, below).

By the time Noskova arrived at her first championship point, her total rallying dominance was absolute.

2. Dramatic 5-Game Run Sparked Unimaginable Second Set Turnaround

A week of intense competition in North Carolina culminated in an unexpected final between second seed Lucrezia Stefanini (WTA No. 163) and qualifier Savannah Broadus (WTA No. 463), with the most significant title of their respective careers on the line.

Broadus reached the final on an absolute tear, winning 14 of her previous 15 matches. That incredible stretch included capturing her second career singles title at W50 Guimarães (Portugal) just 3 weeks earlier, also as a qualifier. Before that run, Broadus had made only one other professional final appearance, at W15 Lincoln (USA) in 2024. Her limited Tour history was explained by her commitment to college tennis at Pepperdine University.

In the Cary final, the 23-year-old American impressed with quick, aggressive strikes off her forehand wing.

She also flashed terrific backhands, though her execution off that side was a lot more irregular.

As a seasoned professional, Stefanini soon began directing traffic heavily toward the Broadus backhand. The 28-year-old Italian, featuring rare two-handed groundstrokes off both sides, left the risk-taking to her opponent. Instead, Stefanini leaned on her court coverage and superior consistency to steer the match towards longer, scrappy rallies.

After falling behind 0-2 early, the second seed immediately broke back. She set up the break point with a passing winner on the 16th shot, then converted it via a Broadus backhand error.

The gap in experience grew increasingly evident as the match progressed. Stefanini reeled off 6 of 7 games to claim the opening set and quickly built a decisive 3-1 lead in the second. During this stretch, Broadus dropped serve 4 times; across 3 of those games, she failed to convert a combined total of 9 game points.

Stefanini maintained the same uncanny ability to turn games around when the trophy was within touching distance. She erased 4 break points across her final 2 service games, including clawing back from 0/40 down while serving at 5-2. The Italian sealed a 6-3, 6-2 triumph with a winning ‘T’ serve.

The final match stats perfectly captured the contrasting strategic approaches. Broadus finished with 22 winners against 47 unforced errors, whereas the more conservative Stefanini racked up just 9 winners but leaked only 17 unforced errors, outperforming Broadus by 17 points (-8 to -25).

That gap was primarily driven by distinct backhand performances. Broadus accumulated 28 unforced errors off that wing to finish at -21. Stefanini’s backhand was 15 points better, posting a -6 differential from 5 winners against 11 unforced errors.

Also noteworthy was Stefanini’s +1 forehand differential, achieved despite striking just 4 winners since her error-control was top-class.

Stefanini’s superior shot tolerance led to equal 6-point advantages in both medium and long rallies. Her 2-point edge in first-strike tennis just confirmed a general dominance on the day.

An area where Stefanini showed a critical superiority was game point conversion. The second seed converted 60% of her 20 chances to lock a game, highlighted by a clinical 5-for-7 (71%) performance on break points.

Broadus actually held one more game point opportunity than her opponent but converted only 5, resulting in a meager 24% success rate. She went 2-for-7 on break points (29%) and struggled even more on her own delivery, converting just 3 of 14 service game points (21%).

Like Broadus, Stefanini entered the Cary Tennis Classic having last celebrated a singles title in Portugal, at W50 Montemor-o-Novo. That victory came in June 2024, however, rather than 3 weeks prior. Over the ensuing 24-month period, Stefanini reached just a lone final, an outing late last season that left bittersweet memories. On Italian soil at Rovereto, her maiden appearance in a WTA 125 title decider ended in a quick and disappointing 1-6, 1-6 loss to Oksana Selekhmeteva.

By snapping a 2-year title drought in Cary, Stefanini now holds fresher and happier memories to build upon. With her 11th career singles title, she joined the list of champions at the highest W100 level on the World Tennis Tour.

On paper, Gauff entered the Centre Court showdown with the superior pedigree, armed with two Major titles and a commanding 6-1 head-to-head advantage.

Muchova countered with present momentum. Fresh off a title in Bad Homburg and riding a 9-match winning streak, she also brought the psychological boost of having finally beaten Gauff in their most recent meeting.

First Set

The start of the Wimbledon semifinal closely resembled that April clash at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, where Gauff’s forehand was notably slow off the blocks. The American struggled to develop any rhythm or confidence on her forehand wing once again, as Muchova ensured she never fed her the same ball twice. The Czech fluidly shifted between slow, short slices and fast line drives on her backhand with great ease and remarkable consistency. As a result, Gauff committed 6 forehand rally errors to go along with 5 forehand return errors. Meanwhile, Muchova’s solidity from the back of the court impressed and created a decisive 17-10 gap in baseline duels won.

The opening set veered toward a one-sided affair once Muchova engineered a 5-game surge, storming from 0-1 to 5-1. Critical to this run was her superior execution on the crucial moments contested between the 3rd and 6th games. With each of those games featuring at least a pair of break opportunities, Muchova successfully secured two breaks of the Gauff serve while erasing all 5 break points she faced—including digging her way out of a 0/40 hole while serving at 4-1.

Second Set

Facing her third consecutive one-set deficit of the tournament, Gauff responded by drastically raising her aggression levels. She opened the set with a flawless, winner-filled hold (forehand volley, ‘serve+1’ backhand, and a pair of aces) and never looked back.

Relative to her opening set performance, the American increased her average forehand speed by 11 MPH and her backhand by 4 MPH, striking 37% of her total shots in active attack.

Remarkably, Gauff achieved this offensive surge while simultaneously becoming significantly more consistent. She slashed her unforced errors down to 7 (from 13 in the first set) and total errors to 12 (from 21), which allowed her to secure an even split of 16 baseline duels. That was more than enough for the 7th seed, given her willingness to come forward and near-perfection once in the forecourt: 6 net winners against a single error, converting 11 of 12 net forays (92%).

A poor 41% 1st serve percentage was one of the few things Muchova struggled with in the first set. To improve it, she chose to take some pace off her delivery and roll more balls into play. That second set adjustment backfired completely, leading instead to a dismal 43% 1st serve win rate. Rushed by Gauff’s relentless aggression, Muchova committed 6 ‘serve+1’ mistakes. Otherwise, the fate of most points rested entirely on Gauff's racquet; Muchova managed just 3 winners in the entire set, while Gauff surrendered a mere 4 of 21 points on serve and did not face a single break point.

This high-stakes fourth round clash marked a familiar matchup for these two tennis titans. Throughout the year, Osaka and Sabalenka have frequently crossed paths in the round of 16 at the game's biggest tournaments, contesting blockbuster showdowns on the hardcourts of Indian Wells and the clay of Madrid and Roland-Garros. Each time, Sabalenka edged out the Japanese star by summoning an extra gear of raw, unmatched power, using that immense baseline threat to seamlessly blend in surprising variety.

But that script was completely flipped with the shift to the grass of the All England Club. A resurgent Osaka not only matched Sabalenka’s heavy baseline artillery, she utterly out-served and out-hit the top seed.

One of the major keys to Osaka’s success was the regular depth she found early in the point. Her flat shots blended perfectly with the skidding grass surface to jam Sabalenka, force the world No. 1 to make contact with the ball very low, or starve her of the time needed to wind up her big swings.

In contrast, Osaka’s compact strokes gave her several chances to strike back, even against Sabalenka’s deep shots. The former No. 1 also put her continued movement and agility improvements from the back of the court on full display, making it difficult to break through her defense. Frustrated by how the match was progressing, Sabalenka overpressed and racked up the errors.

Osaka’s breakthrough in this matchup finally arrived by reversing several metrics and factors that were highlighted and discussed in our analyses of their previous confrontations.

1. The 2nd Serve Return

Back in Madrid, Osaka’s chances were severely hurt by a poor 2nd serve return performance, where she landed only 39% of those returns and won just 27% of the points. She completely corrected this deficiency in London, returning into court 72% of 2nd serves faced (21/29). Her 5-point run against Sabalenka’s 2nd serve early in the first set proved vital. It contributed to back-to-back breaks—the only ones in the entire match—resulting in an opening 5-1 lead that asserted Osaka’s authority in the contest.

2. ‘Return+1’ Offense

Another key improvement from Osaka was her ability to win points off her first shot after the return (i.e. the ‘return+1’), a tactical element she sorely missed at Roland-Garros. While in Paris Naomi was limited to just 3 4-shot points won, that number jumped to 12 at Wimbledon.

3. Middle-of-the-Court Production

The above video provides hints to another critical battle Osaka dominated: middle-of-the-court execution.

You may recall a shift in this particular metric coinciding with Sabalenka’s comeback from a set down in Madrid or Aryna’s start-to-finish superiority at Roland-Garros that translated into a massive 16-point gap.

The story of Eala’s young career is one of relentless trailblazing, rewriting her nation’s tennis history almost weekly. Two days ago, the 21-year-old lefty achieved another monumental milestone, dethroning defending champion Swiatek at Wimbledon to become the first Filipina to reach the second week of a Major. Now holding a 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Swiatek, Eala continues to prove that she thrives against elite opposition, improving her career record against Top-5 opponents to a remarkable 5-4.

Eala’s adaptation to grass has been equally impressive. She carried a stellar 12-3 season record on the surface into today’s fourth round clash against Jasmine Paolini. Her grass-court swing includes a title at WTA 125 Birmingham and a semifinal appearance at WTA 500 Berlin, highlighted by massive victories over Queen’s champion Donna Vekic, world No. 2 Elena Rybakina, and Elina Svitolina.

A primary catalyst for Eala’s success on grass is how the surface shields her vulnerable serve. The low, slick bounce prevents opponents from easily attacking her delivery, while her natural slice skids aggressively off the turf. Eala also seems to be injecting a bit more pace into her serves and decreasing her exposure by reducing middle-of-the-box serves. A glaring liability has been transformed into a weapon, at least for a few weeks.

Against Swiatek, Eala finished with 4 aces, no double faults and a 26% unreturned serve rate. She collected a free point out of every four 1st serves landed and did the same on 2nd serves.

While credit must be given to Eala for improving her serving quality, these numbers also reflect Swiatek’s poor returning.

The former world No. 1 saw her rating on return drop significantly from an excellent 8.9 in her previous Wimbledon matches to a dismal 6.3 in the first set against Eala, falling below the tournament average of 6.9.

Across the entire match, Swiatek missed a staggering 22 returns. Half of these were classified as unforced errors, and not even her backhand—the only shot she still trusted by the end of the match—held up on return.
