Upset of the day: the elimination of 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko at the hands of Camila Osorio. Ostapenko joins Caroline Garcia as the only seeds out thus far.
Wimbledon champion and 9th seed Barbora Krejcikova required 2h55min and a final set tie-break to get past Sara Sorribes Tormo.
Caroline Wozniacki was 2 points away from losing at 2-6 4-5 0/30* but managed to recover against Mayar Sherif.
There a couple of double-bagel winners on the day: Qinwen Zheng and Maria Lourdes Carlé.
